Gardeners Surrey Health and Safety Policy
Gardeners Surrey is committed to providing professional gardening services while protecting the health, safety and welfare of our clients, our team, visitors and members of the public. This policy sets out our approach to managing risks associated with gardening and grounds maintenance work, and supports our aim of operating safely and responsibly at all times.
Policy Aims and Responsibilities
Our aim is to prevent accidents, injuries and work-related ill health by identifying hazards, assessing risks and implementing effective control measures. Health and safety is a shared responsibility and all members of our team are expected to follow this policy as a condition of their work.
Management is responsible for putting in place suitable arrangements, providing appropriate equipment and training, monitoring standards and reviewing this policy. Gardeners and support staff are responsible for working safely, using equipment correctly, following instructions and reporting hazards, incidents or near misses promptly.
Planning and Risk Assessment
Before starting new gardening or landscaping tasks, we consider the potential risks to our team, clients and the public. Where necessary, we undertake task-specific risk assessments and agree safe working methods. These may cover, for example, work involving powered machinery, working at height, use of chemicals, manual handling, and work in confined or restricted spaces such as narrow access paths or courtyards.
We take into account site-specific conditions such as uneven ground, steps, ponds or water features, overhead branches, underground services and vehicle movements. When conditions change significantly, or new hazards are identified, our team adjusts working methods and updates risk controls as needed.
Training, Supervision and Competence
Gardeners Surrey ensures that staff are competent to carry out their duties safely. Team members receive appropriate instruction and training for the tasks and equipment they use, including power tools, lawnmowers, hedge trimmers, blowers and other machinery. New staff are given an induction explaining our health and safety procedures and expectations.
Less experienced gardeners are supervised until they demonstrate that they can work safely and follow agreed procedures. We encourage ongoing learning to keep skills and safety awareness up to date, and we regularly remind staff of their responsibilities through briefings and on-site discussions.
Use of Machinery and Equipment
All tools and machinery used by Gardeners Surrey must be suitable for the task and maintained in safe working condition. Equipment is inspected regularly, and any defects are reported immediately and taken out of use until repaired or replaced. Guards, safety devices and manufacturer instructions are always followed.
Only trained and authorised team members are allowed to operate powered equipment. Fuel and other flammable materials are handled and stored with care to minimise fire and environmental risks. When working near members of the public, we use safe working distances, barriers or warning signs where appropriate to prevent contact with moving machinery or flying debris.
Personal Protective Equipment
We provide and require the use of suitable personal protective equipment where risks cannot be eliminated by other means. Depending on the task, this may include safety footwear, gloves, eye protection, hearing protection, high-visibility clothing and respiratory protection. Staff are responsible for looking after their protective equipment and reporting any damage or loss so that it can be replaced promptly.
Chemical and Environmental Safety
Where weed control or other treatments are required, Gardeners Surrey selects products carefully and uses them sparingly and responsibly. We follow supplier safety information and apply treatments in line with relevant guidance to protect people, pets, wildlife and plants that are not being treated.
Chemicals and other hazardous substances are stored, transported and disposed of safely to minimise any risk to health or the environment. Our team takes care to avoid contamination of soil, drains and water features and to prevent drift onto neighbouring properties.
Manual Handling and Physical Wellbeing
Gardening work often involves lifting, carrying, pushing and pulling. We plan tasks to reduce the need for strenuous manual handling by using equipment such as barrows and trolleys and by breaking heavy loads into smaller, manageable parts wherever possible.
Staff are trained to use safe lifting techniques and to recognise their own limits. We encourage team members to speak up if a task is too heavy or awkward for one person so that assistance or an alternative method can be arranged.
Working at Height and Access
When work at height is required, such as pruning, hedge cutting or gutter clearing, Gardeners Surrey uses appropriate equipment and safe systems of work. Ladders and access equipment are checked before use and are only used on firm, stable ground. Overreaching is avoided and tools are secured so far as reasonably practicable.
We plan work to prevent falls, falling objects and contact with overhead services. Where necessary, work areas are cordoned off to protect occupants and passers-by from potential hazards.
Client and Public Safety
We take care to protect clients, visitors, neighbours and the general public from risks created by our work. This includes maintaining tidy work areas, managing vehicle movements carefully, keeping pathways as clear as reasonably possible and using signs or temporary barriers when appropriate.
We are mindful of noise, dust and disturbance, and we aim to carry out noisy operations at reasonable times. Waste materials such as branches, clippings and soil are stacked safely until removed from site or placed in agreed locations.
Accident, Incident and Near Miss Reporting
All accidents, injuries, dangerous occurrences and near misses involving Gardeners Surrey staff or activities are reported and recorded. We investigate incidents to identify causes and to implement measures that reduce the likelihood of recurrence. Where required, we cooperate with any official investigations or requests for information.
Review and Policy Availability
Gardeners Surrey reviews this Health and Safety Policy regularly, and whenever there are significant changes in our work activities, equipment or legal obligations. Updated versions are communicated to our team so that everyone understands current requirements and safe working procedures.
This policy is available to clients on request so they can understand how we manage health and safety during the delivery of our gardening and maintenance services.
